I research and write blogs on what’s happening in the EV-world.

The electric car market has undergone remarkable shifts in recent years, yet the introduction of the Bentley Torcal is the next step in luxury driving.

Competing manufacturers like Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus, and Lamborghini have all slowed or adjusted their electric vehicle rollout plans, giving Bentley an opportunity to make its mark in the high-end luxury EV market with the Torcal.

Rather than simply swapping an engine for an electric powertrain, Bentley has leveraged the Torcal to reimagine everything from cabin materials and acoustics to how passengers experience the interior.

So, what does the Bentley Torcal offer, and what can it tell us about the next generation of luxury electric cars?

What Exactly is the Bentley Torcal?

The Bentley Torcal is a five-seat, fully electric luxury SUV and the first battery-electric production vehicle in Bentley’s history. Bentley says the name was inspired by El Torcal de Antequera in Andalusia, Spain, an area known for its dramatic limestone landscape. The manufacturer also notes that “Torcal” shares the same root as “torque”.

Bentley crafted the Torcal with a focus on making acceleration feel just as thrilling as it sounds. Instead of mimicking traditional petrol engine noises, Bentley created a unique audio signature that adapts to how the car performs, delivering what they call an experience like “enjoying a magnificent orchestral concert”. The goal is to give the Torcal its own distinctive personality while keeping that exciting, emotional feel you’d expect from a Bentley performance vehicle.

Two Bentley Torcal Models

Bentley has introduced two exciting versions of the Torcal: the standard Torcal and the high-performance Torcal S.

The base Bentley Torcal features sprints from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and tops out at 155mph. It has a WLTP range of 372 miles, with an estimate of 320 real-world miles, making everyday driving a breeze.

But the Torcal S pushes performance to new heights. When you engage Launch Control, its specially tuned dual electric motors unleash 876bhp and 1,350Nm of torque. It has a WLTP range of 372 miles and a real-world range of 205 miles. That makes the Torcal S the most powerful production Bentley ever created:

  • 0-60 mph in just 2.8 seconds
  • 0-100 mph in 2.9 seconds
  • top speed of 161mph.

For a five-metre-long luxury SUV, those are genuinely impressive figures.

Bentley’s New Generation of Materials

Some of the Torcal’s most exciting innovations are tucked away inside. While leather and walnut have always been hallmarks of Bentley interiors, the Torcal brings fresh materials and textures into the mix, all while honouring the brand’s dedication to time-honoured craftsmanship.

A standout example is 100% merino wool fabric. According to Bentley, lambswool has never quite measured up when it comes to the toughness needed in this setting. They produced what Bentley calls the first 100% merino wool fabric strong enough for use in vehicles.

It gives drivers a fresh choice alongside classic luxury materials and demonstrates how time-tested manufacturing methods can be reimagined for today’s electric vehicle cabins.

How Quickly Does the Bentley Torcal Charge?

When it comes to making an EV practical for longer trips, charging speed is just as important as range. With its 113 kWh battery, the Torcal can charge from 10-80% in approximately 16 minutes when using a DC charger.

Whilst using a 350kW charging station, Bentley indicates that drivers can gain over 150 miles of range in roughly 10 minutes. This could make the Torcal especially well-suited for extended journeys, where a quick charging break could deliver enough additional range to keep you moving without long breaks.

However, actual charging speeds will vary based on elements like the specific charger type and battery temperature.

Four Distinct Environments for Every Journey

The Bentley Torcal comes equipped with four distinct modes:

  • Bentley Mode: the default setting, blends comfort and craftsmanship with an engaged, driver-focused character.
  • Comfort Mode: softens lighting and slows the cabin’s pace, with a digital detox option that reduces on-screen information.
  • Sport Mode: sharpens sound and visual cues to heighten the connection between driver and car.
  • Refresh Mode: is exclusive to the Torcal, it increases fresh-air circulation and brightens lighting to fight fatigue and restore alertness on long drives.

This reflects a significant shift happening across modern vehicle design today. Car makers are now thinking carefully about how the complete cabin experience shapes your journey from start to finish.

What does this mean for the electric future?

One of the most significant aspects of the Bentley Torcal is what it reveals about how the electric vehicle industry is maturing. Electric cars have moved beyond being solely catagorised by their batteries, charging speeds, and range.

While these practical features remain crucial, especially for businesses and drivers, the growth of electric powertrains across the automotive industry gives manufacturers greater freedom to express their own vision of what an electric car can entail.

For Bentley, that vision centers on premium materials, and a thoughtfully designed interior.

FAQs

Yes. The Bentley Torcal uses an electric powertrain. Bentley says instant electric torque is central to its performance characteristics.

Bentley says the name was inspired by El Torcal de Antequera in Andalusia, Spain, an area known for its dramatic limestone landscape. The manufacturer also notes that "Torcal" shares the same root as "torque".

Under suitable conditions, the Bentley Torcal can charge from 10% to 80% in around 16 minutes using a compatible DC rapid charger. Bentley also says approximately 150 miles of range can be added in around 10 minutes at a 350kW charging point.

Both versions are fully electric luxury SUVs, but the Torcal S has been designed with a greater emphasis on performance. It offers more power and torque, quicker acceleration and performance-focused features compared with the standard Torcal.
