EV Charging Explained – Home, Work & Public

Charging can be done at home, the workplace, or at public stations. Each offers different speeds and costs.

Charging is the area that causes the most confusion, but once you break it down, it’s surprisingly straightforward.

Types of Chargers and Connectors

1. Slow Charging (3–6kW)

Common for:

  • Standard 3-pin plugs
  • Some workplace posts
  • Useful for overnight charging, but too slow for long trips.

 

2. Fast Charging (7–22kW)

  • Most home wall boxes: 7.4kW
  • Public/work units: 11–22kW
  • Perfect for topping up daily.

3. Rapid Charging (50kW+) & Ultra-Rapid (100–350kW)

  • For long motorway journeys.
  • BYD’s latest tech, pushes ultra-rapid charging times even lower.

Home Charging

The cheapest method… even cheaper with Ohme! Typical cost (2025): 18–30p per kWh depending on tariff.

Example: A 60kWh battery @ 20p/kWh = £12 for 200–280 miles.

Public Charging

Slower AC charging: 30–55p/kWh | Rapid DC charging: 55–85p/kWh+

Grants, Road Tax, and Government Incentives

EV financial incentives have changed dramatically.

Home Charge Grants

Available for:

  • Renters
  • Flat owners
  • Some landlords

Not available for most homeowners anymore.

Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

Covers up to 75% of the cost of up to 40 charging sockets.

Plug-in Grants

Some grants were scrapped like the Plug-in Car Grant Slash, but commercial vehicles and taxis still qualify, and others are returning in limited formats.

Road Tax Changes (2025)

  • EVs will pay road tax, but it will still be much lower than petrol/diesel.
