Greenery Day is a Japanese holiday that takes place on the 4th of May, promoting the appreciation of nature and our duty to the environment. With this in mind, we thought it would be interesting to look into how Japan’s car industry is adapting to the worldwide shift towards cleaner transportation.
For fleet managers and companies looking into ultra-low emission vehicles, Japanese electric cars offer both potential and challenges.
Japanese Electric Cars in 2026
Japan has traditionally focused on hybrid technology, with companies like Toyota leading global adoption. However, the fully electric vehicle market is starting to grow as regulatory pressures increase and global demand rises.
EV sales in Japan rose by 3% in 2025, marking the first increase in seven years. This remains modest compared to the UK, wider Europe and much of the world, where adoption is significantly higher.
This slower growth is largely driven by continued consumer preference for hybrids, alongside limited charging infrastructure. It is also influenced by lifestyle factors, with many residents living in apartments or dense urban areas where access to home charging is limited.
Japan Charging Infrastructure and Future Plans
As of 2023, Japan had around 31,600 EV chargers, compared to over 119,000 across 46,000 locations in the UK. Given Japan’s larger size and population, this highlights a significant gap. To address this, Japan aims to install 300,000 public charging ports by 2030. It has also shifted how it measures charge points, moving from stations to connectors to better reflect charging capacity.
Plans include increased investment, relaxed regulations around high-voltage substations, mandatory installations, and improved distribution. There is also a focus on strategic charger placement, with intervals of around 70km along expressways. While EV sales are beginning to rise, a broader shift in consumer preference will be key to accelerating growth.

The Nissan Family: Nissan Leaf
The Nissan Leaf remains one of the most recognisable electric cars on the market, and one of the earliest mass-market EVs. For 2026, it’s had a noticeable refresh, moving towards a more modern, crossover-style design.
It continues to be a strong all-rounder, offering a balance of affordability and usability, with faster models reaching 0-62mph in as little as 6.5 seconds.
Two battery options are available.

Nissan Micra Electric
The Micra Electric brings Nissan into the compact EV space with a practical, city-focused option. While still small, it now offers five doors, five seats, and improved interior space.
It features a sportier design, with 18-inch wheels and styling similar to a MINI Electric or Fiat 500e, but with a larger boot and more practicality.
Two battery options are available.
- 40kWh: 198 miles WLTP // 205 miles real world range
- 52kWh: 260 miles WLTP // 160 miles real world range
Nissan Ariya
The Nissan Ariya is Nissan’s flagship electric SUV, competing with models like the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4.
It offers strong range and charging performance, reaching 80% in around 30–35 minutes.

Toyota Electric Cars
Toyota has taken a more cautious approach to fully electric vehicles, focusing heavily on hybrids and hydrogen until recently. However, models like the bZ4X mark its move into the mainstream EV market.
Toyota BZ4X
Produced in Japan, the bZ4X is a family-focused electric SUV which comes in 3 battery sizes, accelerating to 62mph in as little as 5.1 seconds.

Toyota has also announced plans to significantly expand its electric vehicle range by 2030, signalling a stronger push into the EV market over the coming years.

Lexus UX 300e
The Lexus UX 300e is the entry point into the range, offering a compact electric SUV designed for urban and everyday driving. It delivers up to 273 miles WLTP (around 230 miles real world), with smooth performance and a strong emphasis on build quality and comfort. It competes with models like the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Mercedes-Benz EQA.

Lexus RZ 450e
Further up the range, the Lexus RZ 450e sits on a dedicated EV platform, offering a more advanced and spacious SUV experience. It comes with all-wheel drive as standard and reaches 0–62mph in around 5.3 seconds.
Range sits at around 272 miles WLTP (up to 220 miles real world range), with the focus placed on refinement, technology, and driving experience rather than outright efficiency.

While brands like Nissan and Toyota lead the way, other Japanese manufacturers are taking a more selective approach to electrification, focusing on specific models and niche strengths.
Subaru Solterra
The Subaru Solterra is a good example, co-developed with Toyota and sharing its platform with the bZ4X. However, Subaru leans more into its all-wheel-drive heritage, giving the Solterra a slightly more rugged feel. It delivers 289 miles WLTP (around 195 miles real world range), along with practical features like a 750kg towing capacity, making it a more lifestyle-focused electric SUV.

Honda Electric Cars
Honda’s current EV offering is led by the Honda e:Ny1, a compact SUV designed for everyday usability. It offers 256 miles WLTP (around 200 miles real world range), along with a practical interior and familiar design, making it a straightforward option for drivers transitioning to electric.

Looking ahead, Honda is also expected to launch the Super N in 2026. This model focuses on affordability and urban driving, with around 128 miles WLTP (approximately 100–130 miles real world range). It is likely to compete with smaller, city-focused EVs like the Fiat 500e and Hyundai Inster.

The Mazda 6e
Mazda, meanwhile, is preparing to enter the longer-range EV space with the upcoming Mazda6e. This model offers up to 348 miles WLTP (around 290 miles real world range), alongside rapid charging that can reach 80% in as little as 15 minutes. With strong design credentials, it signals a more serious push into electrification from the brand.
With 1,500kg towing capability, 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, and awarded the 2026 World Car Design of the Year award, this is definitely one to watch. The price tag is £38,995 retail, and it’s scheduled to release in mid-2026.

How Japan Is Responding to Electrification
Japan’s approach to electrification differs noticeably from the UK and wider Europe. Rather than focusing solely on battery electric vehicles, it has taken a more gradual and varied route.
Hybrids remain a core part of the strategy, with continued investment in hydrogen fuel cell technology alongside a steady expansion of battery electric models. This is reflected in the current line-up, where brands like Toyota and Honda are still scaling up, while Nissan leads with a more established EV offering.
In contrast, the UK continues to push more aggressive adoption of fully electric vehicles to meet net-zero targets, supported by faster infrastructure growth and stronger policy incentives.
Final Thoughts
For UK businesses, Japanese EVs offer a strong balance of reliability, brand recognition, and improving electric performance. Models like the Nissan Leaf and Ariya show how established players are evolving, while Toyota and others are beginning to expand their EV presence more seriously.
