What is BYD?

BYD is a Chinese multinational manufacturer, with its subsidiary BYD Auto bringing us new and affordable electric vehicles. You might be wondering, “What does BYD stand for?” apparently it stands for Build Your Dreams – sweet, right?

Founded in February 1995, BYD is a high-tech company devoted to leveraging technological innovations for a better life.

BYD offers comprehensive new energy solutions with zero emissions. BYD has already stopped production of all gasoline-powered vehicles and turned their focus to sustainable motoring.

In June 2022, they also reported that they had sold nearly 650,000 EVs in the first half of the year, overtaking Tesla as the largest manufacturer in the world.

Charging a BYD

Like most electric cars nowadays, the BYD family can recharge 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes. BYD also partnered with Shell Recharge, bringing BYD drivers platinum membership offers, which drastically reduce the cost of public charging.

There are loads of shell recharge hubs opening across the UK.

After hearing all that, we definitely have some high hopes for the BYD family, so let’s just get into it!

BYD ATTO 2

The BYD Atto 2 is a compact electric SUV tailored for those who desire the convenience of an SUV in a more compact, city-friendly design. Built on BYD’s cutting-edge e-Platform 3.0 and utilising the innovative Blade Battery technology, it provides a smooth driving experience, contemporary aesthetics, and ample everyday functionality. Inside, you will discover a premium cabin featuring a rotating touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, along with a variety of standard driver assistance features.

With an impressive electric real-world range of up to 180 miles from its 45.1kWh battery, the Atto 2 is ideal for daily commutes and routine trips. It also supports rapid DC charging, enabling the battery to go from 10% to 80% in approximately 37 minutes with a compatible charger. Positioned below the Atto 3 in BYD’s SUV lineup, the Atto 2 serves as an economical entry into electric driving, ensuring that you don’t have to sacrifice technology or comfort.

BYD ATTO 3

The BYD ATTO 3 is an electric SUV available in the UK since February 2022. It has a price tag of £36,000 and 200 miles electric range. It also has a top speed of 99mph and an acceleration (0-62mph) of 7.3 seconds. So all-in-all, it’s not exactly rivalling the Porsche Taycan, but it’s definitely a great addition to the mid-range electric cars on the market, and it seems just perfect for the daily commute. This car comes in 5 colours: Surfing Blue, Skiing White, Climbing Grey, Parkour Red, and Exploring Green.

BYD ATTO 3 is equipped with the all-new BYD e-Platform 3.0 designed exclusively for pure electric vehicles. Giving full play to the advantages of intelligence, efficiency, safety and aesthetics, e-Platform 3.0 aims to promote NEVs’ performance in safety and low-temperature driving range as well as improve intelligent driving experiences, to build more efficient and safer new intelligent EVs.

BYD DOLPHIN

The BYD Dolphin, launched in the UK in September 2023,  adopts the “Ocean aesthetics” design concept.

The Dolphin has a range of 265 miles and a 0-62mph in 7 seconds. It’s available in the UK from £18,650 for entry-level mode, up to £31,700 for top spec. Through our scheme, you can take home the BYD Dolphin from just £360/month. 

The BYD DOLPHIN 5-seater family electric hatchback provides V2L technology, which can achieve 3.3kW external discharge. This allows the new energy vehicle to become a mobile power station, perfect for outdoor picnics and open-air movies.

It also has a respectable boot space of 345 litres, expanding to 1,310 litres when the seats are folded flat. It also has a sleek leather interior and a panoramic sunroof.

BYD DOLPHIN SURF

The 2026 BYD Dolphin Surf is a 4-seater supermini electric hatchback designed for urban driving, offered in multiple trims (Active, Boost, Comfort) with battery options of ~30 kWh and ~43.2 kWh delivering real world range 160 miles. It features BYD’s Blade Battery and e-Platform 3.0 architecture, a spacious interior for its class with a 308 L boot (expanding to 1,037 L with seats down), a 10.1” infotainment screen with smartphone mirroring, adaptive cruise control and driver-assist tech as standard.

It has competitive UK pricing from £23,950 for higher-spec Comfort models, making it one of the most affordable well-equipped EVs in its segment.

BYD SEAL

Winning the iF Design Award, you already know this one’s a looker! The BYD SEAL arrived in the UK a little after the DOLPHIN. The BYD Seal’s price in the UK starts around £45,700 to £48,700 (RRP), with deals available from around £43,000, depending on trim (Design/ Excellence). The BYD Seal offers a different range and acceleration figures depending on the model, with the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) Design model achieving up to 300 miles (real world range) and 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds.

The SEAL has had a big upgrade on the other models, featuring the iTAC (or intelligence Torque Adaption Control system). It’s essentially a system designed for reducing or eliminating skidding by “intelligently allocating drive torque, utilising torque shift, appropriate torque reduction, and negative torque output”. You’re basically guaranteed a safer and smoother drive in this EV!

BYD Sealion 7

The BYD Sealion 7 is a sleek all-electric SUV that merges sporty performance with everyday usability. Built on BYD’s cutting-edge e-Platform 3.0 Evo and equipped with the brand’s Blade Battery technology, it delivers a top-notch driving experience featuring a roomy interior, premium materials, and a large rotating touchscreen.

UK models come standard with advanced driver assistance systems, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a panoramic roof. Offered in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, the Sealion 7 boasts a real-world range of up to 290 miles, depending on the variant. It also facilitates ultra-rapid DC charging, enabling the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 24 minutes with a compatible charger. With its combination of performance, technology, and practicality, the Sealion 7 stands out as an excellent option for families and company car drivers eager to transition to electric.

Models Not Available in the UK Right Now

BYD offers several other models in various global markets.

The BYD Han is a high-end electric sedan that provides around 323 miles range and can accelerate to 62mph in less than four seconds.

The BYD Tang is a seven-seater electric SUV with around 330 miles range, ample cargo space, and remarkable towing capacity, making it perfect for families.

BYD has been manufacturing batteries for nearly 30 years; their “latest game-changing Blade Battery has passed a series of extreme tests in rigorous conditions, making it one of the world’s safest batteries”.
