What is Nio? Well, if you’re an electric vehicle lover like us, you may have heard the news. There’s a new(ish) EV manufacturer in town, and they’re looking to mass-produce affordable models; that manufacturer is Nio. We all know about Tesla and other premium EV manufacturers, but these aren’t always the most accessible options for the everyday driver, so it’s great to see new companies out there that are trying to make electric motoring more accessible for all. Here’s everything you need to know about Nio and why they’re targeting the EV mass market:

Who Are Nio?

Nio is a Chinese electric car company that already produce a number of premium models for the higher end of the market. They have now created a sub-brand that will produce affordable EV models to rival current offerings from Toyota and Volkswagen.

The newer brand Onvo, which stands for “Path to Happiness”, was created to compete with mid range EVs like the Tesla Model Y.

Nio isn’t the most popular brand in Europe… yet. In fact, they have only really launched their models as a test in Norway, but they have hopes to enter the UK market soon if there’s enough interest. Nio is the industry lead in battery swapping charging tech to reduce charge times by just swapping out your battery.

What Do We Know About Their New Affordable Electric Car?

Nio has created their sub division called the Firefly. This division currently showcases the new affordable city car they’ve created.

The Nio Firefly is a compact, upscale electric hatchback designed to bring the marque’s high-tech approach to urban driving. It went on sale in China in April 2025, pairing a rear-mounted 105 kW motor with an interchangeable 42 kWh LFP battery and offering an estimated 420 km range on China’s CLTC cycle (around 330 km WLTP).

Fast charging at up to 100 kW replenishes the battery from 10% to 80% in around half an hour, while Nio’s own battery-swap stations can replace a pack in just three minutes.

The Firefly accelerates from 0-62 mph in roughly eight seconds and reaches a top speed of nearly 150mph, focusing on responsive, agile city driving rather than outright velocity.

Smart packaging provides a frunk and a roomy cabin, and the car’s rigid body delivers assured handling. Positioned against luxury compact EVs such as the Mini Electric and Smart #1, the Firefly sets the stage for Nio’s plan to introduce its pioneering battery-swap ecosystem to Europe later in 2025.

Nio ET9

The Nio ET9 is making waves internationally as a genuine game-changer in the luxury EV segment. Towering above the ET7 in Nio’s line-up, this high-end saloon combines remarkable performance figures with world-first technology.

It uses a 100 kWh battery to power a 925 volt system and supports 600 kW DC fast charging enough to add around 158 miles of range in just five minutes, or to swap to a fully charged pack in three. Dual motors deliver nearly 700 horsepower and more than 400 miles of CLTC-estimated range, yet the real magic lies in the ride.

The ET9 debuts Bose inspired Sky Ride magnetic predictive suspension, developed with Clear Motion, which reads the road and adjusts each corner 60 times faster than conventional systems. Combined with China’s first mass produced steer by wire set up, the result is an uncannily smooth, almost otherworldly drive that soaks up potholes and keeps the body perfectly level. From its sleek fastback design to a cabin capable of mimicking a 4DX cinema.

The ET9 demonstrates how Chinese EV makers are not only closing the gap but setting the pace in high tech luxury motoring.

Nio’s Other Electric Vehicles

Nio is most well-known for its premium model electric vehicles that have become popular in China. They recently launched their ES8 SUV and ET7 saloon models in Norway, which have been met with plenty of positive reviews which is a good sign for what’s to come with their more affordable options.

Nio’s Electric Car Charging

Electric cars get a lot of criticism surrounding charging, and Nio is here to try to change this!

Nio uses ultra-fast chargers, which give you hundreds of miles in under 30 minutes, and has a growing network of automated battery swap stations, which swap your Nio battery in under 5 minutes. The driver just parks and the rest is automated, giving you a fully-charged battery. This system is pretty widespread in China and is making its way over to Europe.

Nio offers batteries as a service; this lowers upfront costs and allows easier upgrades as and when technology improves. This improves sustainability and allows vehicle’s to be kept on the road and businesses running smoothly.

Nio also provides the Power Mobile, which is like a power bank for your electric vehicle. The power mobile is like AA for your electric vehicles and will come to you and charge your vehicle if you find yourself in a situation that requires it.
