Electric estates are becoming increasingly popular, especially among company car drivers and families who need ample luggage space without the need for an SUV.
In 2026, two of the top contenders are the Audi A6 e-tron Avant and the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer. Both vehicles provide remarkable electric ranges, high-end technology, and functional interiors, yet they appeal to slightly different audiences. So, which one should you consider adding to your shortlist?
Audi A6 e-tron Avant: Estate Versatility with Futuristic Finish
The Audi A6 e-tron Avant feels like a concept car that made it to production without being watered down. The Edition 1 Performance version that Charlotte Patsides drove had serious presence on the road; sharp, low-slung lines and a confident, estate-style profile that felt both familiar and radical.
This is a car that takes the best bits of the A6 Avant (space, balance, long-distance usability) and adds an electric powertrain with real muscle. A 100 kWh battery (94.9 kWh usable) powers the rear wheels with 270 kW (and temporary boosts to 280 kW), delivering 565 Nm of torque. The result? A 0–62 mph time of 5.4 seconds and the kind of rolling, refined acceleration that just feels right in a luxury EV.
Most impressive, though, is the range. WLTP figures promise between 390–447 miles, and even in dynamic sport mode, Charlotte achieved close to 400 miles during mixed driving, although real-world range will vary depending on driving style, weather and conditions.
The Cabin Backs it up
A blend of minimalist design and high-spec tech. Audi’s triple-screen layout is more than a gimmick. The curved 11.9” driver display, 14.5” centre OLED and 10.9” passenger screen make the cabin feel collaborative. That third screen isn’t just for show; passengers can queue up directions, pick music, or even launch a karaoke session on long drives.
That said, it’s not without its flaws:
“The driver’s door handle is bulky, almost overdesigned. All the seat and window controls are embedded in it, which makes it feel more like a small console than something you naturally grip. And the lane departure warning system could do with calming down. At times, it was a little too hands-on, nudging the steering just when I didn’t want it.” – Charlotte Patsides

Volkswagen ID.7
Where the Audi goes bold and premium, the Volkswagen ID.7 plays a quieter game, and it’s no worse for it.
At first glance, the VW ID.7 looks understated, but step inside and it’s clear that this car has been built with real-world needs in mind. If you’re looking for space, comfort, and ease of use, especially as a family driver, the ID.7 genuinely delivers.
Sophie’s Thoughts:
Sophie, a mum of two who recently spent time with the car, summed it up well:
“As a mum of two young kids, space and practicality are top priorities, and the ID.7 delivers on both fronts. The cabin is impressively spacious, with plenty of room for two car seats and generous legroom in the back. There’s enough space that little feet aren’t constantly kicking the backs of the front seats, a small but meaningful win for parents!”
It’s those everyday touches that make the difference. And she wasn’t the only one impressed. Adrian, another test driver, also highlighted the cabin’s generous dimensions:
“Interior room is excellent, especially in the back. Legroom is proper limo-level, even tall adults can stretch out comfortably.”
Technology in the Volkswagen ID.7 is a mixed bag.
The 14” central touchscreen looks impressive, and Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant genuinely helps manage tasks like navigation or climate control without taking your eyes off the road. Sophie found IDA helpful: “It was intuitive, quick to respond, and meant I didn’t have to fumble with the screen mid-drive.”
But Adrian flagged a few frustrations, especially around the touchscreen layout and controls: “Entertainment and vehicle settings are hard to find. Some of the most-used features are buried too deep. The sliding volume and heater controls take some getting used to.”
There are other quirks too…
Like a twisting gear selector on the steering stalk, and a dual-purpose switch for the electric windows, which toggles between front and rear controls. Functional, yes – but it adds an extra layer of learning for new drivers.
Still, the ID.7 has clear strengths where it counts
Space, refinement, range, and efficiency. With a rear-mounted electric motor offering 282 bhp and 545 Nm of torque, it’s quick without being flashy. The Pro S model offers up to 435 miles WLTP range, and DC rapid charging of up to 200kW allows a 10-80% charge in around 26 minutes under ideal conditions.
If you’re someone who prioritises daily comfort, space for passengers, and sensible electric driving, the ID.7 stands out. It’s not showy, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s calm, clever, and purpose-built for people who live with their cars, not just look at them.
The Verdict: Which Executive EV Wins?
Both the Audi A6 e-tron Avant and Volkswagen ID.7 are impressive electric offerings, but they serve different needs.
The A6 e-tron Avant is the choice for those wanting prestige, range confidence, and show-stopping tech. It’s a car that makes a statement and follows through with substance. If you’re after a long-range electric estate that feels properly luxurious without going full SUV, this is it.
The Volkswagen ID.7, meanwhile, is a smart choice for those who value usability over flash. It’s spacious, efficient, and ideal for everyday family life. It might lack some of the flair and fine-tuning of the Audi, but its ride quality, clever voice assistant, and vast interior space make it a strong contender, typically at a lower starting price than the Audi.
In the end, it comes down to what you value most:
- Premium luxury, longer range and faster charging? Go Audi.
- Maximum practicality, comfort and value? Go Volkswagen.
Either way, the future of electric executive cars is here – and it’s looking very usable indeed.
