I research and write blogs on what’s happening in the EV-world.
We can all pretty much agree at this point, the Rivian is a lost cause for the UK. But that doesn’t mean the electric pick-up truck market isn’t taking shape, and big EV player, BYD, wants in.
Best known in the UK for its electric cars like the Dolphin, Seal and Atto 3, BYD is now expanding into the commercial and utility space with its first electrified pick-up: the BYD Shark 6.
So, what exactly is it? Now that the BYD Shark 6 is set to arrive in the UK during 2026, the focus turns to final pricing, specifications and whether it could work for fleets and salary sacrifice drivers.
What Is the BYD Shark 6?
Unveiled in May 2024, the BYD Shark 6 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pick-up truck. It’s the brand’s first move into the utility segment, designed to deliver electric efficiency with the rugged performance businesses expect from a pick-up.
The Shark 6 runs on BYD’s new DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) platform, developed specifically to combine electric motors with traditional petrol power. That means it can handle demanding off-road conditions while reducing emissions and lowering fuel use in day-to-day driving.
Key specs of the BYD Shark 6:
The BYD Shark 6 is powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors to deliver all-wheel drive and up to 430bhp (470bhp in some international markets). It uses BYD’s 29.6kWh Blade Battery, offering an electric-only range of around 50 miles (WLTP), while accelerating from 0-62mph in approximately 5.7 seconds. We had the opportunity to see the Shark 6 up close at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it made its UK public debut and showcased its blend of rugged capability and modern technology.
Designed to be as capable on the worksite as it is on the road, the Shark 6 can tow up to 3,500kg, carries a payload of up to 835kg and features a premium interior with BYD’s signature rotating touchscreen, digital cockpit and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance and off-road technologies.

Is the Shark 6 Fully Electric?
Here’s where some confusion has emerged. The current and only confirmed version of the Shark 6 is a PHEV. There is no fully electric model announced yet. BYD has said that the DMO platform could support a pure electric version, but they haven’t released any specs, model name, or timeline. So for now:
- Confirmed: BYD Shark 6 PHEV
- Not yet confirmed: Any all-electric Shark model
Fleet managers and drivers hoping for a fully electric pickup will need to wait and see if a future EV version is developed. Our fingers are crossed.

BYD Shark 6 UK Release Date
BYD has confirmed the Shark 6 for the UK, with customer deliveries expected during 2026. Final UK pricing and model specifications are still to be announced.
The UK model will arrive as the plug-in hybrid version, with no fully electric Shark currently confirmed for sale.
BYD has not yet confirmed UK pricing for the Shark 6. However, it is expected to undercut the Ford Ranger PHEV, which starts from around £40,830 excluding VAT. If BYD follows its usual pricing strategy, the Shark 6 could become one of the more affordable electrified pick-up options in the UK.
Why It Matters for Fleets
Electric pick-ups are in short supply in the UK. While the Maxus T90EV is fully electric, it lacks the range and power some users need. The Ford F-150 Lightning isn’t officially sold here. That leaves a gap, and the BYD Shark 6 could fill it.
Why fleets should watch the Shark 6:
- Clean-air compliant with electric-only urban driving
- Petrol hybrid for long-distance or remote work
- Lower running costs than diesel alternatives
- Rugged off-road performance with modern technology
- Potentially affordable pricing based on BYD’s track record
Final Thoughts: One to Watch
The BYD Shark 6 is an important step forward for electrified utility vehicles, especially in markets like the UK, where options are limited. While it’s not a fully electric pick-up (yet), it offers a strong balance between capability, cost, and cleaner driving.
Now that BYD has confirmed the Shark for the UK, it could become a key choice for construction firms, local authorities, utility companies and drivers who need low-emission transport without sacrificing practicality.
With the UK launch now expected during 2026, we’ll be keeping a close eye on final pricing and specifications. As soon as the Shark 6 becomes available, we’ll be looking to add it to our salary sacrifice scheme.
